A surah (plural: ayaat) or chapter is one of the units into which the Quran is divided. The Quran consists of 114 chapters and each sura has several Ayaat (verses) with varying lengths. The holy book is composed primarily in Arabic, with approximately 15% in the original Proto-Semitic linear B script and about 83% using Arabic script as found in today's copies. It was memorized by Muhammad over a period of 23 years, with its verses (ayah) revealed by God through Gabriel to Muhammad according to nearly rhythmic patterns. The word "Quran" does not appear anywhere within its text. A sura is further subdivided into verses. The term aya is often used generically for a verse, verse group or chapter in the Quran. The word "surah" is the Arabic word for a part or portion of a text that includes a subject matter or theme and usually also the text itself. Surahs are then written within their own sections within chapters. The concept of book in written languages was not familiar to them at first, because it was not known whether they would have been book-keepers after the Dieties said this. [Quran 26:196] [26:198] [40:66-67] [43:3-5] [46:12]. It was not until the time of Muhammad that the concept of book became known. The Old Testament was considered not a book because it did not follow the Jewish tradition of writing nor did it have a definitive beginning or end. However, the Quran is only a portion of what God revealed to Prophet Muhammad according to Islam. It is because God said in Qur'an 17:106 that He would send down "more from the same..." Therefore, the Quran is only one very small part of what God has revealed to Muhammad. Chapter ( _ "sura") and verses ( _ "ayah" or _ "aya") are the units into which the Quran is divided. The chapters and verses correspond to sounds rather than meaning, so it is possible to read a verse without knowing its meaning. There are various ways in which the surahs grade in importance: Al-Baqara ("The Cow"), consisting of 286 verses, is the second chapter of the Quran. It contains much of the same material found in Ayah 1-286 of Al-Ma'ida, and thus takes up about one fifth of the Quranic content. It begins with belief in Allah and ends with judgement day and their accountability for their deeds. Al-Imran ("The Family of Imran"), consists of 143 verses, is the second chapter of the Quran. It has much in common with Ayah 1-143 in Al-Baqara, and so takes up about one fourth of the Quranic content. The key concepts are belief in God and Mohammed's teachings, and justice over all things, seen here in the concept of believers being rewarded by Allah Almighty with paradise for their exaltation. Al-Nisā' ("The Women"), consists of 162 verses, is the third chapter of the Quran. It takes up about one fifth of Quranic content.
